'Manjappada' factor and more: Why UAE royal family-backed group acquired Kerala Blasters

United Arab Emirates-based sports tech consortium Al Fursan Group has taken full ownership of Indian Super League club Kerala Blasters FC. The takeover marks a major turning point for the Kochi-based football club as it prepares for the upcoming 2026–27 season.

The transaction brings an end to the ownership of Hyderabad-based Magnum Sports, which had managed the club since 2016. Al Fursan, led by Sheikh Ahmad bin Faisal Al Qasimi of the ruling royal family in the UAE, signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the club's shares.

The transition will take time. Ownership will transfer in phases over the next eight months without disrupting ongoing club operations, subject to league and regulatory approvals. Day-to-day management has been handed to Kerala-based sports firm Ofioh Sporty, led by Chief Executive Thameem Anvar and co-founder Sharath Kuniyil. Anvar assured supporters that the club remains in safe hands. 

How the deal was struck and its value

Magnum Sports put the club up for sale after actively searching for a buyer. Interested parties completed financial, legal, and operational due diligence before the purchase was finalised. Sports agency Birbal Sports & Entertainment, founded by Jitesh Mehta and Ronak Dalal, facilitated the deal. The agency will continue working with Kerala Blasters to assist with player recruitment for the new season.

While club officials did not publicly state the purchase price, industry sources value the deal at approximately Rs 120 crore. This places it among the largest foreign investments in Indian football. In an official social media statement, Kerala Blasters thanked the incoming owners for their professionalism and commitment to upholding the club's values.

Why the Gulf consortium invested

Al Fursan’s decision to buy the club stems largely from the Blasters’ immense fan base, popular across the globe as the 'Manjappada'. The club commands some of the highest stadium turnouts and digital engagement numbers in Asian football.

Investing in Kerala Blasters allows the consortium to build its global brand presence while connecting directly with millions of non-resident Keralites living in Gulf countries. The acquisition forms part of 'Project Blasters', an initiative to expand Al Fursan's international sports and technology network.

What lies ahead for the club

The new owners plan to build a dedicated stadium for Kerala Blasters, alongside creating modern training facilities and youth academies. Club Chief Executive Abhik Chatterjee confirmed that Kochi will remain the team's home base, dismissing rumours of a shift to Kozhikode or a delay to opening fixtures. Home matches will continue at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium.

Ashley Westwood remains head coach and will handle all squad decisions. Pre-season training begins on Wednesday at Mahabalipuram, with squad announcements expected shortly. The Blasters start their campaign away to Inter Kashi on 11 October, before playing their first home match against Mumbai FC on 25 October.
