Liverpool: In a deeply poignant gesture following his tragic death last week, Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 shirt worn by beloved forward Diogo Jota. The decision, announced by the Premier League club on Friday, ensures his number will forever be honoured across all levels of the club, encompassing the men's, women's, and academy teams.

Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, also a soccer player, tragically died in a car crash near Zamora, Spain. In a statement filled with emotion, Liverpool expressed the profound significance of the No. 20 shirt: “It was the number he wore with pride and distinction, leading us to countless victories in the process — and Diogo Jota will forever be Liverpool Football Club's number 20.”

The retirement of his shirt marks a unique tribute in Liverpool's history. Michael Edwards, CEO of football for Fenway Sports, Liverpool's owner, stated, “I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club's history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person." He added that the club consulted with Jota's family before making the decision, acknowledging the overwhelming sentiment from supporters. “By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal, and therefore never to be forgotten," Edwards affirmed.

Jota had just concluded the most successful season of his career, playing a pivotal role in Liverpool securing a record-equaling 20th English league title. He also achieved international success, winning the UEFA Nations League with Portugal. Throughout his Liverpool tenure, he made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals, and contributed to winning the FA Cup, English League Cup and the Premier League title.

The football world has been in mourning since the news of his passing. Players from both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team joined family and friends for the joint funeral of Jota and his brother last weekend. Anfield Stadium, Liverpool's iconic home ground, has been adorned with countless floral tributes as part of the widespread outpouring of grief.
