Global soccer icon Lionel Messi officially introduced himself to the players and staff of UE Cornellà on Thursday, marking his first formal address since acquiring the club and pledging his commitment to the fifth-division team’s development.

The Inter Miami CF captain, who finalised the purchase of the Spanish side on April 16, expressed his enthusiasm for the venture through a recorded video greeting. The move marks Messi’s growing business portfolio and his continued interest in the maturation of youth soccer.

"I wanted to say hello and tell you that we are here, to grow and to help in whatever way is needed. We are very excited about this new project," Messi said in the message delivered to the squad.

The announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for the club. With only two fixtures remaining in the Tercera RFEF regular season, Cornellà has already secured a position in the promotion playoffs for a move up to Segunda RFEF. Messi has been vocal in his encouragement, previously stating on social media during a recent match, "I'm following you and supporting you every weekend."

Focus on Youth Development

UE Cornellà has long been recognised for its prolific academy, which has served as a springboard for top-tier talents including David Raya, Gerard Martín and Messi’s former Barcelona teammate, Jordi Alba.

In a statement released Thursday, the club framed the takeover as a transformative milestone for the organisation.

"Leo Messi's arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in the club's history, aimed at driving both sporting and institutional growth, strengthening its foundations, and continuing to invest in talent," the club said. "The project is guided by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that combines ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local roots."

While Messi continues his professional playing career in Major League Soccer, the acquisition of UE Cornellà shows a strategic effort to apply his experience toward a long-term plan focused on sporting excellence and institutional stability within the Spanish football pyramid.
