Kevin Pina scores historic first-ever World Cup goal for Cape Verde

Miami: In a momentous occasion for international football, midfielder Kevin Pina has etched his name into the history books by scoring Cape Verde's first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup tournament.
The historic breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute of Cape Verde's Group H encounter against South American giants Uruguay at the Hard Rock Stadium. The goal sent the travelling Cape Verdean supporters into an ecstatic frenzy, marking an unbelievable milestone for the small island nation, making its debut on football's grandest stage.
The sequence leading to the historic moment began when Uruguayan midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was penalised and given a yellow card for a foul on Telmo Arcanjo just outside the penalty area. Pina, a defensive midfielder who plays his club football for Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar, stepped up to take the set-piece roughly 25 to 30 yards from goal.
Pina curled a brilliant, right-footed free kick completely through Uruguay's defensive wall, blasting the ball past the diving goalkeeper Fernando Muslera into the bottom left corner of the net. This magnificent strike was only the second direct free kick scored at the entire 2026 World Cup tournament, following a similar feat by Canada's Nathan Saliba against Qatar.
The goal gave Cape Verde a sensational, unexpected 1–0 lead over the two-time World Cup winners. A nation of roughly 530,000 people erupted in celebration as Pina sprinted towards the fans' section, with his teammates quickly piling on top of him on the pitch to celebrate what no Cape Verdean had ever achieved before.
This stunning performance builds upon the island nation's magical start to their debut World Cup campaign. Cape Verde previously shocked tournament favourites Spain in their opening fixture last week, holding their superstars scoreless in a memorable 0–0 draw in Atlanta, heavily aided by a stellar performance from goalkeeper Vozinha.
