Kane or Mbappe? Mourinho’s Ballon d’Or comments trigger fan debate

Jose Mourinho’s latest comments on the Ballon d’Or have sparked debate among football fans, with some interpreting his remarks as an indication that he would like to see Harry Kane, whom he coached at Tottenham Hotspur, win the prestigious individual award.

Mourinho has previously spoken highly of Kane and remains an admirer of the England captain. His comments about the Ballon d’Or, particularly his emphasis on individual brilliance rather than team trophies, have led some observers to suggest that Kane could fit the profile of the player he believes deserves the honour.

However, the Portuguese manager did not explicitly name Kane as his preferred candidate in his latest remarks. Instead, Mourinho said the award should recognise players whose individual greatness makes them unforgettable.

"For me, the Ballon d'Or should go to those players we miss forever when they retire. I miss Maradona, (Ronaldo) Nazario, Messi, Zidane and Matthaus. You cannot give the Ballon d'Or to players just because they won the Champions League or the World Cup."

The comments have also triggered a different interpretation among fans. Some argued that Mourinho’s stance could favour Kylian Mbappe, particularly given the French forward’s individual profile and his status among the world’s elite players.

Mourinho, however, did not identify Mbappe as his preferred winner either. He insisted that the award should not simply be a reward for winning a major competition.

"The Ballon d'Or has a political character, and if politics gets involved, I do not like that," he said.

The debate comes as the Ballon d’Or continues to generate discussion over whether individual performances, team success or a combination of both should carry the greatest weight in determining the winner.
