India 2-1 Hong Kong: Ryan Williams smashes 63-yr-old national record in Asian Cup qualifier at Kochi

Kochi: India concluded its AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign on a high note on Tuesday, securing a 2-1 victory over Hong Kong at the Kochi Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The win marked a long-awaited breakthrough for the Blue Tigers and provided a positive end to a challenging final round in Group C. India finished the stage with five points, consisting of one victory, two draws, and three defeats. Singapore topped the standings with 14 points to secure the lone qualification spot for the tournament in Saudi Arabia.
Head Coach Khalid Jamil utilised the fixture to introduce fresh talent, handing a starting debut to Ryan Williams and a first international appearance off the bench to Bijoy Varghese.
A Historic Debut
The hosts seized momentum immediately, with Williams scoring just four minutes into his international career. The goal originated from a rapid transition down the right wing; Abhishek Singh Tekcham found Manvir Singh, who provided a square pass for Williams to tap in.
The strike set a new national record for the fastest goal by an Indian debutant. Williams surpassed the previous six-minute records held by K. Appalaraju against Ceylon in 1963 and Mehtab Hossain against Nepal in 2005.
Buoyed by the early advantage, India controlled the tempo and dominated possession. The defensive unit remained disciplined, frequently swarming Hong Kong’s attackers to neutralise potential threats. India remained dangerous on the counter-attack, nearly doubling the lead in the 25th minute when a powerful long-range effort from Apuia whistled just wide of the target.
Second-Half Surge
India maintained its offensive pressure following the interval. In the opening moments of the second half, a long throw from Rahul Bheke caused chaos in the Hong Kong penalty area. Akash Mishra reacted first to the loose ball, drilling a right-footed shot from a sharp angle to record his first international goal and extend the lead to 2-0.
Hong Kong managed to respond just after the hour mark. Braunshtain Barak exploited a gap in the centre of the Indian defence to find Everton Camargo. The forward timed his run to perfection, beating the sliding defenders to the ball and slotting it past goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to reduce the margin.
Despite the late pressure from the visitors, the Indian backline held firm to preserve the victory and gift the home crowd a winning farewell to the qualifying cycle.
