India announce 28-member squad for Unity Cup 2026 in London

India senior men’s football team head coach Khalid Jamil on Thursday unveiled a 28-member preliminary squad for the upcoming Unity Cup 2026 in London, marking the beginning of a crucial international assignment for the Blue Tigers.
The squad announcement comes immediately after the conclusion of the Indian Super League season, with players now expected to report to Bengaluru for a short preparatory camp before the final travelling squad is announced.
The Indian contingent is scheduled to leave for London on May 24. Speaking about the significance of the tournament, Jamil said the Unity Cup would play a major role in shaping India’s preparations for key competitions later this year, including the SAFF Championship.
“The Unity Cup will be the perfect opportunity for us to prepare for the official tournaments like the SAFF Championship later this year. We need to utilise every available FIFA International Window,” Jamil said.
India, currently ranked 136 in the FIFA rankings, will face 71st-ranked Jamaica in the second semi-final on May 27 (IST). The tournament opener will feature African giants Nigeria, ranked 26th, against Zimbabwe.
Jamil stressed that facing stronger opponents would help Indian footballers gain confidence and experience at a higher competitive level.
“We are playing against strong teams that play at a good level. These matches will give confidence to the players and help us improve,” he added.
The preliminary squad features several experienced campaigners alongside young talents who impressed during the ISL season.
Veteran goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu headlines the goalkeeping department alongside Vishal Kaith, Hrithik Tiwari, and Albino Gomes.
India’s defensive unit includes seasoned names such as Rahul Bheke, Sandesh Jhingan, Anwar Ali, and Akash Mishra.
Navi Mumbai-based defender Rahul Bheke remains one of the key pillars in India’s backline heading into the tournament.
The midfield will be led by Lalengmawia Ralte, Sahal Abdul Samad and Anirudh Thapa, while the attack features exciting names like Lallianzuala Chhangte, Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh.
The tournament could prove to be a defining test for Jamil’s tenure as India look to improve their international standing and build momentum ahead of future continental competitions.
