England’s path to the FIFA World Cup semifinals runs through one man: Erling Haaland.

Norway’s remarkable campaign has been built around their prolific striker, who has emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament. With seven goals in five matches, Haaland has accounted for more than half of Norway’s 12 goals, underlining just how decisive he has been in the final third.

Stopping Haaland, however, is not as simple as assigning a defender to shadow him.

One of Haaland’s greatest strengths is his efficiency. The Manchester City striker needs very few opportunities to influence a match. He has converted seven goals from only 18 shots during the tournament, making him one of the most clinical finishers in the competition, apart from Lionel Messi and Harry Kane.

His movement inside the penalty area remains among the best in world football. Rather than constantly involving himself in build-up play, Haaland often waits patiently before making explosive runs behind defenders or attacking crosses with impeccable timing. That makes him especially dangerous against teams that push their defensive line high.

Neutralising Haaland begins long before the ball reaches him. Norway captain Martin Odegaard remains the team’s chief creator, dictating tempo and repeatedly finding Haaland with precise through balls. No player has combined with Haaland more often during the tournament, making their partnership the heartbeat of Norway’s attack.

England’s midfield trio, led by Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, will therefore have an equally important assignment. Limiting Odegaard’s time on the ball could reduce the number of dangerous situations Haaland receives.

While Odegaard controls the game centrally, Andreas Schjelderup has emerged as another crucial provider.

The Benfica winger changed the game against Brazil, supplying Haaland for both goals in Norway’s 2-1 victory. His direct running and accurate deliveries have added another dimension to Norway’s attack, meaning England cannot focus solely on Odegaard.

Whether Schjelderup or Antonio Nusa starts on the left, Norway possess pace and creativity capable of stretching England’s defensive structure.

At the same time, Haaland is among the strongest forwards in world football, but his threat extends well beyond physical dominance.

His intelligent positioning allows him to disappear from games before suddenly attacking space inside the box. He rarely needs multiple touches to score and constantly occupies centre-backs, forcing them into difficult decisions.

England’s likely central defensive pairing of Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi will need to remain switched on throughout the contest, as even a brief lapse in concentration can prove costly.

If England are to contain Haaland, they must avoid allowing him to receive early crosses or through balls in central areas.

The ideal defensive approach involves forcing him wider, delaying his runs, and denying quick service into dangerous zones. Compressing space between midfield and defence will be critical, reducing the opportunities for Odegaard to release Norway’s star striker.

England must also be prepared for transitions, where Haaland’s pace and direct running become particularly devastating.
