Munich: The Allianz Arena will be the stage for a highly anticipated UEFA Nations League semifinal clash on Wednesday, 4 June, as Germany hosts Portugal. Both footballing powerhouses will be vying for a spot in the final, with the encounter promising a tactical battle and dazzling individual displays.

Germany, making their debut in the Nations League semifinals, secured their place by topping their League A group unbeaten, followed by a hard-fought 5-4 aggregate quarter-final victory over Italy. Under Julian Nagelsmann, the squad has shown renewed vigour.

However, they face significant injury concerns with key defenders Antonio Rüdiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, and midfielder Jamal Musiala all sidelined. Despite these absences, the return of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from a nine-month injury lay-off provides a boost. Joshua Kimmich is set to earn his 100th cap, and the in-form Florian Wirtz is expected to lead the charge.

Portugal, the inaugural Nations League champions from 2019, is aiming for their second title. They also progressed from their group unbeaten and overcame Denmark 5-3 on aggregate in the quarter-finals after an extra-time win in the second leg. Roberto Martínez’s side boasts a wealth of talent, including the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo, dynamic midfielder Bruno Fernandes and skilful winger Rafael Leão. While largely injury-free, the absence of João Cancelo could be noted.

Historically, Germany holds a strong advantage in head-to-head encounters, winning 11 of their 19 meetings, with Portugal only managing three victories. Notably, Germany has won the last five competitive fixtures between the two nations, all in major tournaments. Their last encounter at Euro 2020 saw Germany emerge 4-2 winners.
