Houston: Yoane Wissa etched his name into his nation's sporting history on Wednesday, scoring the Democratic Republic of Congo's first-ever FIFA World Cup goal to secure a sensational 1-1 draw against heavyweights Portugal.

The momentous equaliser at the Houston Stadium in Texas shattered a 52-year dry spell on the world stage for the African nation. The country’s only previous World Cup finals appearance came back in 1974 under their former geographical name, Zaïre.

Exorcising the Ghosts of 1974

During that tumultuous 1974 campaign in West Germany, the team suffered three consecutive group-stage defeats without finding the back of the net once. They famously conceded 14 goals over those three matches, including a brutal 9-0 thrashing by Yugoslavia and a 3-0 defeat to Brazil. For more than half a century, that zero in the goals-scored column remained a painful historical anomaly for Congolese football.

The Moment of Breakthrough

Entering the 2026 tournament as distinct underdogs, the modern 'Leopards' fell behind early in the sixth minute when Portugal's teenage starlet João Neves fired home. However, manager Sébastien Desabre’s well-organised squad refused to fold under the intense pressure of the occasion.

The historic moment of breakthrough finally arrived in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time. Meeting an accurate, looping cross from full-back Arthur Masuaku, Brentford forward Yoane Wissa rose highest inside the penalty area to steer a powerful, composed header past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Despite Portugal completely dominating the possession, the African side maximised their rare attacking transitions, restricting a star-studded frontline featuring Cristiano Ronaldo to just three shots on target.
