FIFA World Cup 2026: Cape Verde hold Saudi Arabia, set up Round of 32 clash with Argentina

Cape Verde etched their name into FIFA World Cup history on Friday, becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for the tournament's knockout stage after holding Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 draw in their final Group H match.
The result capped a remarkable debut campaign for the island nation of just over 500,000 people.
Cape Verde remained unbeaten in the group stage, following up a goalless draw against Spain and a spirited 2-2 comeback draw with Uruguay to finish second behind the group winners.
Their qualification was confirmed after Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 later in the evening, ensuring Cape Verde progressed to the Round of 32 with three points from three matches.
They are now set to face defending champions Argentina in Miami on July 3. Cape Verde's success was built on another outstanding display from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha.
The 40-year-old produced a string of crucial saves, denying Mohamed Kanno before halftime and later keeping out efforts from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat and Abdullah Al-Hamdan to preserve a clean sheet.
Saudi Arabia pushed hard for a breakthrough, while Cape Verde also threatened through Kevin Pina, Laros Duarte and Nuno da Costa, but neither side managed to find the net.
When the final whistle in Spain's victory over Uruguay confirmed their qualification, Cape Verde's players and supporters erupted in celebration.
The historic achievement marked one of the biggest underdog stories of FIFA World Cup 2026, with the Blue Sharks turning a dream debut into an unforgettable run to the knockout stage.
