Philadelphia: Croatia kept their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive on Sunday (IST) with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana at Philadelphia Stadium. The win, crucial for Croatia’s progression, ensured they reached the knockout stage.

A Tightly Contested First Half

Croatia controlled the tempo early on, nearly opening the scoring in the 17th minute through Nikola Vlašić, whose powerful drive struck the post. The deadlock was eventually broken in the 31st minute when Petar Sučić converted a well-constructed attacking move, firing a low shot past Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Croatia entered the interval with a narrow 1-0 lead, having enjoyed 54 per cent possession during the first half.

Second-Half Intensity

Ghana showed greater ambition following the restart, introducing fresh legs to inject pace into their attack. Their persistence was rewarded in the 74th minute when debutant Derrick Luckassen headed home an equaliser following a precise cross from substitute Ernest Nuamah.

Vlašić Seals the Result

With the match poised at 1-1, Croatia regained the advantage in the 83rd minute. Luka Modrić delivered a pinpoint corner kick into the penalty area, where Vlašić rose highest to head the ball beyond Asare. Despite late pressure from Ghana, the Croatian defence held firm to secure the 2-1 result.

The win sees Croatia advance from Group L. While Ghana fought valiantly, the defeat leaves the Black Stars to finish third in their group.
