Cristiano Ronaldo provisionally suspended after decision to walk out from Portugal national team

Barcelona: The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) announced on Saturday that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, provisionally suspending him following his decision to walk out on the national squad.
"Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo," said the federation in a statement, classifying the case as "urgent" and confirming Ronaldo is currently suspended pending a decision on the final punishment.
The rift began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal's match against Norway on September 27, where he was made to warm up as a substitute without being brought on. Upon learning he would not start the subsequent fixture against Denmark on October 1, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star left the squad.
Ronaldo expressed regret to supporters earlier this week while taking aim at Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, though he acknowledged he would accept whatever disciplinary measures were taken. On Tuesday, Portugal's all-time record goalscorer and appearance-maker accused Jesus of breaking a promise regarding playing time during Nations League matches, but clarified he has no plans to step away from international football.
"I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo said, while accepting his actions must be "punished" by the federation.
Despite the controversy, Portugal secured qualification for the Nations League quarter-finals with two games to spare after winning all four of their group matches.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo rejoined his club side Al-Nassr on Friday, scoring a goal in their -0 victory over Diriyah in the Saudi Pro League. (AFP)
