Kansas City: Netherlands and Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has asked for privacy after he and his partner, Noa van der Bij, announced the loss of their unborn son during pregnancy.

Van der Bij shared the heartbreaking news in an Instagram post on Saturday, alongside a photograph of the couple holding hands over a blanket and a knitted hat.

“With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy,” she wrote.

“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”

In a separate post, she described a visit to church with the couple's young son, Samuel, where they lit a candle in memory of their baby.

“We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.

“There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”

Gakpo also shared a brief statement on social media, requesting space for his family during the difficult period.

“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family.

“We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”

The 27-year-old is currently with the Netherlands squad at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he has started all three group-stage matches and scored twice.

The Dutch Football Association confirmed that Gakpo would remain with the national team at their training base in Kansas City.

“We are supporting the family wherever we can,” the association said in a statement.

“After discussing the situation with his partner, Cody has decided to remain with the team.

“We respect their privacy and will therefore not comment further on the situation.”

The Netherlands, managed by Ronald Koeman, topped their World Cup group and are scheduled to face Morocco in the last 32 in Mexico on Monday.
