Premier League title race 2026: Arsenal welcome back Bukayo Saka ahead of crucial Newcastle match

London: Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is prepared to return to the lineup for Saturday’s home fixture against Newcastle United, providing a major lift to the club’s Premier League title aspirations after a month-long injury layoff.
The England international has been sidelined for Arsenal’s previous five contests—a stretch that saw the team suffer three defeats—due to an Achilles ailment.
"Bukayo is probably going to be in the squad," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta announced Friday. "So, good news."
Managing the Star’s Recovery
Arsenal is attempting to recover from consecutive league losses to Bournemouth and Manchester City, results that saw the club relinquish the top position in the standings to City. Saka, who is projected to be a primary starter for England in the upcoming World Cup, has not featured in a match since Arsenal’s defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
Arteta expressed optimism regarding the attacker's physical condition during a press conference. "We have given him some time because there was a moment that he was struggling to sustain the performances because he wasn't comfortable at all," Arteta explained. "We've done that, so he had the right treatment, the right space. He had some time as well for himself, and now it's the most important part of the season, and he's back with us."
The manager noted a discernible shift in the team’s morale following the return of the winger, who also missed recent international duty. "He was in great spirit today," Arteta said. "You can see that the sun is shining and that he's back with the team because he had a different energy. He's been through a tough period. We certainly missed him, and he's back with us now."
Defensive Updates
Arteta also provided updates on the fitness of defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber. Calafiori, who last appeared during Arsenal’s Champions League quarterfinal first-leg victory over Sporting CP, is expected to join Saka in the matchday squad.
The Italian defender has seen more frequent action this term compared to the 2024/25 season. Despite facing injury setbacks in 2026, Arteta remains confident in Calafiori's ability to conclude the campaign at a high level.
"He's been much better this season than he was in the previous season. He was really unlucky in the previous season that he had last year as well," the manager remarked. "He's putting so much into it as well, and hopefully we can keep him fit."
Arteta confirmed that Timber will remain unavailable for the Newcastle match, stating simply that the defender is "not in the squad."
