Atlanta: Ugly scenes erupted at full-time as England's heartbreaking 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina culminated in a heated post-match altercation involving Jude Bellingham and several opposition players.

Thomas Tuchel’s side had looked poised to secure a historic final berth after Anthony Gordon opened the scoring in the 55th minute. However, late goals from Enzo Fernández and a 92nd-minute winner from Lautaro Martínez overturned the deficit, sparking euphoric celebrations from the defending champions and igniting pre-existing tempers on the pitch.

As the final whistle blew, tensions rapidly spilt over into a physical confrontation. Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham became embroiled in a flashpoint after appearing to strike the head of Argentinian defender Valentín Barco. Media outlet Football 360 noted that the England squad took severe exception to Barco, an unused substitute, who had run onto the pitch to celebrate directly in front of the distraught Three Lions players.

The incident triggered a widespread melee, drawing in multiple players from both squads. Members of the England squad rushed to support Bellingham, with Aston Villa playmaker Morgan Rogers actively having to be separated from the escalating confrontation as bodies converged in the centre of the pitch.

The lack of sportsmanship drew immediate criticism from observers. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson condemned the behaviour, stating, "We've not seen much sportsmanship today, and that was probably the worst example of sportsmanship we've seen at this World Cup".

While the exact verbal catalysts behind the fracas remain unconfirmed, the hostile conclusion encapsulated a spiteful and intensely combative fixture. FIFA has yet to confirm whether disciplinary action or post-match investigations will be launched against any of the individuals involved in the brawl. Argentina will now progress to face European champions Spain in the World Cup final on Monday (IST), whilst England exits the tournament in deeply bitter circumstances.
