Who will win Ballon d’Or 2026? Hours to go as Yamal, Kane and Mbappe battle for top honour

London: Lamine Yamal leads an artificial intelligence-based prediction of the 2026 Ballon d’Or race, but Harry Kane has emerged as the favourite in betting markets ahead of the awards ceremony in London, setting up a closely watched contest involving Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.
The winner of football’s most prestigious individual award will be announced at the London Palladium on Monday, with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 8 pm GMT (1:30 am IST on Tuesday). The event marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or and its first staging in London since 2015, when it was last held outside France.
AI predictions put Yamal ahead of Kane and Mbappe
According to data released by French analysis firm Avisia, Yamal has a 23% chance of winning the award. Kane follows with 21%, while Mbappe and Rodri are each assigned a 19% chance. Messi is fifth in the prediction, with an estimated 18% chance.
Avisia correctly predicted the top five finishers in the 2025 Ballon d’Or rankings, lending interest to its latest forecast. However, the figures remain predictions rather than a guarantee of the final voting outcome.
Betting markets tell a different story, reportedly giving Kane a 70% chance of claiming the award. The contrast between the two forecasts adds another layer of uncertainty to a race in which the leading candidates have built their cases on different strengths.
Kane’s 73 goals make him a serious contender
Kane’s strongest argument is his extraordinary goalscoring record. The England captain scored 73 goals for club and country during the season, while helping Bayern Munich win domestic honours.
He also became the fastest player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals, achieving the milestone in 98 appearances. His performances have strengthened his case for recognition, particularly after years in which individual scoring achievements did not always translate into major trophies.
Kane’s campaign also included a strong showing for England at the World Cup, where the team finished third. His combination of goals and team success has placed him firmly in contention.

Mbappe has the numbers, but trophies could hurt his chances
Mbappe enters the race with an impressive individual record. The French forward scored 25 goals in La Liga and 15 in the Champions League, according to the reported season statistics. He also claimed the World Cup Golden Boot and became the highest goalscorer in World Cup history, with 12 goals.
However, his failure to win major trophies with Real Madrid or France could work against him in the voting. The Ballon d’Or is decided not only by individual performances but also by team achievements, a factor that could favour Yamal or Kane.
Mbappe finished seventh in the previous year’s Ballon d’Or rankings, and a victory this time would mark a significant shift in his standing among the world’s leading players.
Can Yamal become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner?
Yamal’s case rests heavily on his success with Barcelona and Spain. The teenager helped Barcelona win the Spanish league title and was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign.
At 19, he could also make history. If he wins, Yamal would surpass Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 when he claimed the Ballon d’Or in 1997, to become the youngest winner of the men’s award.
Yet his individual statistics are not considered as strong as those of some rivals, and questions over his influence during the World Cup could affect his chances. His team achievements, however, put him among the leading contenders.
Messi remains in the conversation
Despite being 39, Messi remains a contender after another impressive spell with Inter Miami and a strong World Cup campaign with Argentina. His record of eight Ballon d’Or wins remains unmatched, with his most recent victory coming in 2023.
Cristiano Ronaldo is second on the all-time list with five titles. Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten have won the award three times each.
The winner will be determined by votes from journalists representing the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings. Each journalist ranks 10 players from the 30 nominees, with 15 points awarded to the first choice and one point to the 10th. Individual performances, team achievements, decisive moments and fair play are among the criteria.

Women’s award set for a new winner
The women’s Ballon d’Or will also have a new winner after three-time defending champion Aitana Bonmati missed the shortlist following a leg fracture.
Two-time winner Alexia Putellas is among the leading contenders after helping Barcelona win the Champions League and Spanish league title before joining London City Lionesses. Manchester City forward Khadija Shaw and Barcelona’s Claudia Pina are also among the names to watch.
With Yamal leading one prediction model, Kane favoured by betting markets and Mbappe boasting outstanding individual numbers, the final voting will determine which argument carries the most weight at the London ceremony.
