London: Reigning Premier League champions Arsenal kicked off their 2026–27 campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping aside newly promoted Coventry City 3–0 at a capacity Emirates Stadium on Friday evening.

The Gunners showed no signs of championship hangover, taking control of the encounter from the opening whistle. Kai Havertz broke the deadlock after 14 minutes, capitalising on a defensive blunder from Coventry’s Milan van Ewijk. Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori pounced on the loose ball on the left flank before picking out Havertz inside the penalty box, who expertly placed a low strike into the bottom corner.

Mikel Arteta’s side doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute through Bukayo Saka. Summer signing Christos Tzolis, who delivered an impressive performance on his home debut, pressed relentlessly before whipping a dangerous delivery across the six-yard box. Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only palm the cross into the path of Saka, who tapped in from close range.

The visitors, managed by Frank Lampard, were making their first top-flight appearance in 25 years after winning the Championship last season. However, Coventry struggled to manage Arsenal's relentless high press and rapid movement, failing to record a single touch inside the Arsenal penalty box throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Four minutes into the second half, Arsenal put the match entirely out of reach. A fluid passing combination between Saka and Ben White unlocked the right flank, allowing White to cut the ball back to captain Martin Ødegaard, whose scuffed 10-yard effort wrong-footed Rushworth to seal the victory.

The victory marked Mikel Arteta’s 150th Premier League win as Gunners manager in just 249 matches—making him one of only five managers in competition history to reach the milestone in fewer than 250 games. The seamless victory extends Arsenal's unbeaten home streak against promoted sides to 46 matches and places the champions firmly atop the Premier League table to begin the new season.
