Mikel Arteta reaches historic landmark as Arsenal cruise past Coventry in Premier League opener

London: Reigning Premier League champions Arsenal kicked off their 2026–27 campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping aside newly promoted Coventry City 3–0 at a capacity Emirates Stadium on Friday evening.

The Gunners showed no signs of championship hangover, taking control of the encounter from the opening whistle. Kai Havertz broke the deadlock after 14 minutes, capitalising on a defensive blunder from Coventry’s Milan van Ewijk. The victory marked Mikel Arteta’s 150th Premier League win as Gunners manager in just 249 matches—making him one of only five managers in competition history to reach the milestone in fewer than 250 games. The seamless victory extends Arsenal's unbeaten home streak against promoted sides to 46 matches and places the champions firmly atop the Premier League table to begin the new season.
