Will India participate? Fate of Champions Trophy to be decided today, PCB under pressure

The future of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to be hosted by Pakistan, hangs in the balance as the ICC Board convenes for a critical virtual meeting today. (November 29). The ongoing dispute between India and Pakistan remains unresolved, with India refusing to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns. The outcome of this meeting, expected by 7 pm IST, will determine whether a solution can be found for the tournament’s schedule and venue.
The ICC Board will consist of 16 voting members, including 12 full ICC members and three associate members. With the tournament only months away, the decision is pivotal. The situation has been further complicated by the recent security concerns surrounding Sri Lanka’s A team, which had to cut short its tour of Pakistan following violent protests in Islamabad. These protests, linked to former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party, raised alarms about the safety of hosting international cricket in Pakistan.
Rajeev Shukla, vice-president of the BCCI, reiterated that player safety is paramount, with ongoing discussions about potential solutions. One option gaining traction is the "hybrid model"—a compromise that would see matches played in both Pakistan and a neutral venue, such as the UAE. This model was used successfully in the 2023 Asia Cup, where India’s games were hosted in Sri Lanka while the rest took place in Pakistan. The ICC must now decide if this model can be expanded or if further security concerns will derail the tournament altogether.'
Due to strained political relations, India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup. The two archrivals last played a bilateral series in 2012-13 in India, comprising white-ball matches. Currently, they primarily face each other in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups.
