Kohli’s retirement: Revisiting his Test cricket triumph and tribute to victims of 2018 Kerala Floods

Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket has sparked widespread discussion, but amidst the focus on his illustrious career, one particular moment stands out—his concern and support for Kerala during the state’s darkest hour. His words and actions during the devastating floods of 2018 left a lasting impact, underscoring his empathy for the people affected by the disaster.
On August 22, 2018, after leading India to a remarkable 203-run victory over England in the third Test at Trent Bridge, Kohli took a moment to address the tragedy that had befallen Kerala. "Dedicate this victory to the flood victims in Kerala. This is our bit we can do from the Indian cricket team," Kohli said in his post-match address.
The floods, which had claimed the lives of over 400 people, had devastated Kerala, with many homes destroyed, roads and bridges washed away, and more than 1.3 million people seeking refuge in relief camps. Kohli’s heartfelt dedication not only conveyed solidarity with the flood victims but also provided a sense of hope to those grappling with the aftermath of the catastrophe.
Visit to Kerala and a personal note
Months later, in November 2018, Kohli was in Kerala during the Indian cricket team’s visit for the fifth and final ODI against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
During his stay, Kohli penned a warm message in the visitors' diary of the resort where the team was lodged. "Being in Kerala is nothing short of bliss. I love coming here and love the energy of the whole place. The beauty of Kerala is something to be experienced, and I would recommend to everyone that they come here and experience the energy of God's own country. Kerala is surely back on its feet and absolutely safe to come to," Kohli wrote.
His words were more than just a personal reflection; they were a powerful message to the world that despite the devastating floods, Kerala was ready to welcome visitors again, proving its resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
