Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram could host its first Indian Premier League (IPL) matches this season, with Karyavattom Greenfield Stadium reportedly included among the proposed venues for the 2026 IPL.

The 2026 IPL is scheduled to take place across 18 venues nationwide from March 26 to May 31. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet officially announced the full schedule or confirmed venues, sources indicate that the IPL Governing Council has finalised several locations, including possible matches in Thiruvananthapuram.

Rajasthan Royals, the team formerly captained by Sanju Samson, are exploring alternative home grounds this season as they are unlikely to play at Jaipur Stadium. The Karyavattom Greenfield Stadium is among the venues presented by the BCCI. Rajasthan Royals officials have reportedly inspected the stadium and praised its infrastructure and facilities. No final decision has been made, with multiple stadiums still under consideration.

The stadium has also been proposed to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as a secondary home venue, raising the possibility that both teams could host some matches in Thiruvananthapuram. Management representatives from both franchises evaluated the stadium during the India-Sri Lanka women’s cricket series.

Chennai Super Kings are also showing interest in the venue, particularly with Sanju Samson’s connection to the region. The team sees Thiruvananthapuram as an opportunity to expand its fanbase in Kerala and across South India. The city’s proximity and stable weather conditions make it a convenient choice for hosting matches.

While the Tamil Nadu elections may prompt scheduling adjustments, this could further favour Thiruvananthapuram as a venue. Meanwhile, Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, despite a tragic incident during a previous IPL celebration, has received government clearance to host matches, making a permanent move for Royal Challengers Bangaluru unlikely.

The Greenfield Stadium, which has previously hosted four Twenty20 matches and two ODIs, meets international standards and is regarded by players and commentators for its excellent outfield and pitch.
