BCCI names Ramesh Powar to selection panel, Pragyan Ojha takes over as chief selector

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reshuffled its senior men's selection committee, bringing former India spinner Ramesh Powar into the panel and placing Pragyan Ojha at its helm following Ajit Agarkar's departure.
Powar's induction fills the vacancy left by Agarkar, while Ojha's seniority among the selectors has paved the way for him to become the committee's new chief.
The changes mark a new phase for the panel that selects players to represent India in men's international cricket.
The selection committee plays a crucial role in shaping the national squad, assessing players' performances and identifying the right combinations for different formats.
Its decisions influence team balance, competition for places and the opportunities available to players seeking to establish themselves at the highest level.
Powar returns to the national cricket setup
Powar, a former off-spinner, brings experience from his playing career and subsequent coaching work.
Having represented India internationally, he has remained involved in the game after retiring, including through assignments in domestic cricket and the women's national setup.
His experience beyond playing could offer a different perspective to the selection process, particularly when assessing players' roles, strengths and suitability for the demands of international cricket.
Selection committees must weigh several considerations while putting together a squad, including recent form, consistency, fitness, team requirements and the balance between established players and emerging talent.
Powar will now join the group making those decisions for the senior men's side.
Ojha assumes leadership
Ojha's elevation gives the selection panel a new chairman following Agarkar's exit. The former left-arm spinner represented India internationally before stepping away from his playing career.
As chief selector, Ojha will lead the committee's deliberations on squad selection and other decisions concerning the senior men's team.
The role requires selectors to evaluate performances across domestic and international cricket while considering the team's immediate requirements and longer-term plans.
The committee also identifies players who can fill specific roles and ensures selections reflect the team's needs across formats. Its recommendations remain an important part of the BCCI's broader cricketing operations.
Selection panel faces continuing responsibilities
The changes come as the BCCI continues to oversee India's senior men's cricket programme.
The selection panel will assess available talent and choose squads for the team's international commitments.
For Powar, the appointment brings a new responsibility within Indian cricket administration. For Ojha, taking charge means leading discussions and decisions that can directly affect the national team's composition.
The reconstituted panel's effectiveness will ultimately be judged by its selection decisions, its assessment of player performances, and its ability to identify combinations suited to India's requirements.
With Powar joining the committee and Ojha taking over as chief selector, the BCCI has completed the changes following Agarkar's departure. The panel will now continue selecting India's senior men's team for upcoming assignments.
