Mumbai: Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has strongly advocated for veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to the national short-format squad, calling a potential recall a "no-brainer" given his sustained domestic and franchise performance. Highlighting the 36-year-old’s discipline and remarkable consistency across recent Indian Premier League seasons and domestic outings in the UP T20 League and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shastri asserted that age should not restrict selection when a player delivers elite-level control. Shastri emphasised that Bhuvneshwar’s specialised powerplay swing and death-over execution remain invaluable assets for Team India’s bowling setup.

Consistent Domestic Records and IPL Success

Shastri's endorsement follows a standout franchise campaign where Bhuvneshwar finished among the leading wicket-takers in the Indian Premier League, collecting 28 scalps in 16 matches at an economy rate under eight runs per over. His ability to extract movement with the new ball and maintain tight lengths during pressure overs has reignited discussions regarding his suitability for white-ball international assignments. With India continually evaluating fast-bowling rotation schemes to manage workload across formats, Shastri noted that having an experienced seamer capable of immediate impact provides crucial tactical depth.

Bhuvneshwar’s Perspective on Career Phase

Despite the renewed selection debate generated by commentators, Bhuvneshwar Kumar has expressed complete peace regarding his current status outside the national team. The veteran pacer stated that securing an international recall is no longer a primary obsession, explaining that he now competes strictly for the passion of the game and to stay disciplined in domestic leagues. Acknowledging that natural team transitions and generational shifts are a normal part of professional sport, Bhuvneshwar maintained that while an opportunity to represent India again would be welcomed, he carries no regrets regarding his career trajectory.
