Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) saw an unusual disruption when a pitch invader with  'Free Ukraine' slogan on T-Shirt stole the spotlight. The incident unfolded during the first hour of play, as the individual breached security and attempted to approach Indian captain Rohit Sharma and star batsman Virat Kohli.

Initially targeting Sharma, the invader's efforts to get close to the skipper were thwarted. Turning his attention to Kohli, the individual again tried to make his way towards the former captain but was intercepted by security before he could reach either player. The swift response from the security team ensured the fan was promptly removed from the field, allowing the match to resume without further delay.

The crowd at the MCG appeared divided, with some sections audibly booing Kohli during the incident. The players, though momentarily stunned, quickly regained focus as play resumed.

Kohli Penalised for Code of Conduct Breach

In another development, Virat Kohli faced disciplinary action on the opening day of the Test. The former Indian skipper was fined 20% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct. The penalty followed an on-field altercation with Australian player Konstas, during which the two bumped shoulders in the 10th over of the Australian innings.

Smith Shines with 34th Test Century

Meanwhile, Australia's batting maestro Steve Smith continued his stellar form, notching up his 34th Test century on the second morning of the match. With a display of masterful stroke-play, Smith helped propel Australia to a commanding position, reaching 454/7 at the lunch interval.

Smith’s latest innings marks his second successive century against India and brings him tantalisingly close to the milestone of 10,000 Test runs. His knock ensured Australia maintained control, capitalising on their strong start from Day 1.

As the Test progresses, India will face an uphill battle to claw their way back into the match. With the pitch offering little assistance to bowlers, all eyes will be on the visitors' response to Australia's dominant batting display.

Score Update
