Shubman Gill hits second ODI double century, joins Rohit Sharma in elite club

Guwahati: Shubman Gill produced another landmark ODI innings on Wednesday, becoming only the second batter in men’s ODI history to score multiple double centuries. The India captain reached 200 during the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati as India chased a target of 406.

Gill’s latest double century came more than three years after his first. He had scored 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand in Hyderabad in January 2023.

With his second double century, Gill joined Rohit Sharma as the only two batters to have scored multiple ODI double centuries. Rohit remains the only batter with three ODI double tons.

Gill reached his latest milestone in the 39th over of India’s chase, completing the double century from 117 balls. His innings was significantly quicker than his first double century and came during a high-scoring run chase.

Rohit Sharma also reached a major milestone during the innings, crossing 12,000 runs in men’s ODI cricket. He became the seventh batter overall and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the landmark.

Rohit reached 12,000 ODI runs in his 282nd innings, while Kohli achieved the mark in 242 innings and Tendulkar in 300 innings. Rohit reached the milestone after facing 12,973 balls, compared with 12,853 balls for Kohli.

The two India openers also put together a 255-run partnership during the chase. Rohit scored 101 from 75 balls, while Gill continued his aggressive innings and moved past the double-century mark.

Gill’s second ODI double century and Rohit’s 12,000-run milestone made the Guwahati match a record-filled outing for India’s opening pair.
