Defending champions India underlined their title credentials with a commanding 61-run victory over Pakistan in their Group A showdown at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, booking a place in the Super Eights in T20 WC 2026. Opting to bat first on a tricky surface, India recovered from an early setback through a scintillating counterattack by Ishan Kishan, whose 77 off 40 balls shifted the momentum decisively. He found useful support from Tilak Varma and captain Suryakumar Yadav, while Shivam Dube’s late surge ensured a competitive total of 176.

“I think this is for India,” said captain Suryakumar Yadav after India's big win.

“We stuck to the style of cricket we believe in. On this pitch, setting a target made more sense. Ishan brought in a fresh approach, and after we were 0 for 1, someone needed to steady things — he did that brilliantly,” he added.

“It was great to see everyone contributing with the ball,” Surya said, adding that the team would regroup, enjoy some time together and then shift focus to the upcoming matches when they travel to Ahmedabad.

Pakistan’s chase unraveled almost immediately. Hardik Pandya removed Sahibzada Farhan in the opening over, and Jasprit Bumrah followed up with key strikes to dismantle the top order. Although Usman Khan showed some resistance with a brisk 44 and stitched together brief partnerships, regular wickets stalled any hopes of a recovery. India’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure through the middle overs before sealing the outcome, dismissing Pakistan for 114 in 18 overs — one of their lowest T20 World Cup totals.
