Ahmedabad: South Africa’s middle-order engine room powered a stunning 76-run upset over tournament favourites India on Sunday, fundamentally shifting the landscape of the T20 World Cup Super Eight stage at a silenced Narendra Modi Stadium.

Despite a vintage opening spell from Jasprit Bumrah that threatened to derail the Proteas' innings before it began, David Miller’s calculated aggression and a disciplined spin attack saw South Africa defend a total of 187 with clinical efficiency.

The Turnaround

India appeared to have the match in a stranglehold early on. Bumrah, who became India’s leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history during his opening burst ($3/15$), reduced the Proteas to a precarious 20-3.

However, the momentum shifted behind a defiant 97-run partnership between veteran David Miller (63) and the inventive Dewald Brevis (45). The pair dismantled India’s mid-innings spin duo, clearing the ropes six times to reset the tone. Tristan Stubbs provided the final flourish, punishing the death bowlers to propel South Africa to 187-7.

The Collapse

India’s chase never found a rhythm. The South African pace battery exploited a shifting surface, claiming both openers within the first 12 deliveries.

The knockout blow, however, came from left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. In a decisive four-over spell, Maharaj claimed 3-21, including the prize wicket of captain Suryakumar Yadav. India’s star-studded lineup collapsed under the escalating required run rate, eventually being bowled out for a meagre 111 in the 20th over.

Super Eight Implications

The margin of victory gives South Africa a massive boost to their Net Run Rate, placing them at the top of Group 1. For India, the road to the semi-finals now requires a mandatory win in their upcoming fixture to avoid an early exit from the home tournament.
