Guwahati: India struck early on the opening day of the second Test as Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav removed both South African openers in the space of three deliveries around the morning break. Aiden Markram (38) fell to Bumrah’s probing final delivery of the session, while Ryan Rickleton was trapped by Kuldeep just two balls after play resumed. The quick wickets briefly unsettled the Proteas, but they regrouped effectively on a track offering more batting ease.

Bavuma-Stubbs partnership stabilises South Africa

Skipper Temba Bavuma (36*) displayed his trademark composure, defending solidly and allowing Tristan Stubbs (32*) to find his rhythm. The duo stitched together an unbroken 74-run stand for the third wicket, ensuring South Africa reached 156 for 2 at lunch. The spinners saw some turn, though it was minimal, and Stubbs capitalised on loose deliveries, lofting Kuldeep over long-on for a huge six and pulling Bumrah through mid-wicket.

Bumrah remained India’s standout bowler, exploiting lateral movement where available, while Mohammed Siraj consistently troubled the left-handed Stubbs with deliveries that angled away from the bat. Despite early breakthroughs, South Africa’s composure on a better-prepared batting surface kept them in control by the lunch interval.

Indian bowlers make use of early movement

While the pitch showed no signs of uneven bounce initially, Bumrah extracted lateral movement and also troubled Markram with sharp off-cutters. Mohammed Siraj challenged Rickleton consistently with his angles and movement away after pitching on middle.

Captain Rishabh Pant introduced Nitish Reddy late in the session and switched his end post drinks break, but the debutant bowled steadily without posing major threats. The defensive in-out field setup with three slips, deep point and deep square leg allowed the South African opener pair to score with relative ease once the initial moisture dried out.

Proteas settle despite early scare

Markram produced some elegant strokes, including a crisp punch through covers off Reddy. Rickleton, meanwhile, capitalised on loose deliveries drifting down leg from Siraj and Reddy.

At tea, South Africa trailed India by 90 runs with nine wickets remaining, after responding to India’s first-innings total.

SA skipper Temba Bavuma said during the toss, "We will have a bat. We have got to start afresh. Wicket looks a lot better. Bat first, try to get a big score first up. No cracks (on the pitch) really. Very excited and happy to be part of this historic moment. One change. (Senuran) Muthusamy comes in."

India's stand-in skipper Rishabh Pant, captaining in place of regular skipper Shubman Gill, who is currently recovering from a neck injury, said, "A proud moment, I am thankful to the BCCI for giving me this opportunity. You want to grab it with both hands. The environment is like, focus on yourself. Look at the area where we can improve as a team, and just come together and fight each and every moment. We feel the wicket is good for batting. But at the same time, bowling first is not a bad option either. Shubman is getting well slowly, slowly. He was very eager to play the match. But at the same time, his body didn't allow it. He is going to come back stronger. Two changes. Nitish Reddy (in place of Gill) and Sai Sudharsan (in place of Axar Patel) come in."
