If not Gill, then who? India’s No. 4 quandary could open doors for Abhimanyu or Sudharsan | The probables

As India embarks on a new era in Test cricket under the leadership of 25-year-old Shubman Gill, veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has weighed in on the ideal top-order combination for the challenging tour of England, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. With stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from the format, Gill steps in as India’s 37th Test captain, leading a young side in the first series of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle.
Pujara, who has played 16 Tests in England, suggested that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal should open the innings. He believes continuity is key, noting their recent performances during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. “The openers who batted in Australia — KL Rahul and Yashasvi — should continue,” Pujara said during an online interaction hosted by Sony Sports Network.
Regarding the crucial No.3 and No.4 positions, Pujara said Gill’s batting position would play a pivotal role. While he prefers to see Shubman Gill at No.3, he acknowledged that Gill may opt to bat at No.4 as captain. Depending on Gill’s position, Pujara proposed a flexible top-order configuration.
If Gill bats at No.3, Pujara recommends Karun Nair for the No.4 slot, highlighting his strong domestic record. Alternatively, if Gill prefers to bat at No.4, Pujara suggests Abhimanyu Easwaran or Sai Sudharsan as suitable options at No.3.
Pujara also acknowledged the unique challenges of batting in England, especially against the swinging ball. He noted that Gill's prior experience in England, including appearances in two WTC finals and a county stint with Glamorgan, will help him adapt.
With India entering a transitional phase, Pujara’s insights offer valuable perspective on shaping a resilient and effective top order for the tour ahead.
Jadeja Creates History
Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja has etched his name in the history books by becoming the longest-reigning No.1 all-rounder in ICC Test rankings, holding the top spot for an unprecedented 1,151 days. This milestone surpasses legends like Jacques Kallis and Kapil Dev, further cementing Jadeja’s legacy in Test cricket.
Reacting to the achievement, Jadeja’s wife and BJP MLA Rivaba Jadeja expressed immense pride, calling it a moment of honour for both the family and Indian cricket fans. Speaking to reporters in Jamnagar, she highlighted India’s growth in sports and thanked the players and coaches of the Indian cricket team, expressing hope for continued success in the upcoming Test series against England.
Jadeja, a cornerstone of India’s Test setup, has had a stellar 2024, scoring 527 runs at an average of 29.27 and taking 48 wickets at 24.29. His all-round contributions have been vital to India’s red-ball dominance.
