Hard work paid off; people now happy with decision I made in my life: Cricketer Minnu Mani

Kalpetta: Minnu Mani, a young girl from Choyimoola village in Mananthavady in Wayanad district, has defied all odds to become the first Malayali to feature in the Indian senior women’s cricket team. Minnu, who has been selected in the Indian squad for the upcoming T20 series against Bangladesh, is an inspiration for budding female cricketers in the state. From playing cricket on fields using plastic balls to donning Indian colours, Minnu has come a long way.
Excerpts from an interview with her.
How would you describe your journey so far?
I see this opportunity as a big responsibility. Wherever I am today, it is all because of my hard work. I always wanted to play for India. Sportspeople can never excel without the support of others. On this occasion, I would like to thank all my coaches and teammates.
How did you feel playing alongside legends in the WPL?
To be frank, getting selected for the Delhi Capitals team was a surprise for me. Playing alongside experienced players like Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma was enriching. They were very supportive and I learned a lot from them. I was very tense in the initial stages of the tournament. Playing for the Delhi side was my baby step into international cricket. I played three games for Delhi Capitals in the season, but could not perform as I wished. At the moment, I am working hard on my game.
Who is your favourite cricket player?
There was a time when I watched cricket on TV only to catch a glimpse of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But things aren’t the same anymore. Ever since I became a professional cricketer, I have closely watched all the top players - the way they go about their business on the field. I try to learn from players how to handle pressure.
What do you have to say about the people who stood by you?
As expected, I faced all the hurdles a girl would face establishing herself in a male-dominated sport. Now that my efforts reap benefits, people are eventually happy with the decision I made in my life. Will always be thankful to my sports teacher K M Elsamma, coach Shanavas, and Wayanad Cricket Association secretary Nazir Machan. I grew up playing here in the Krishanagiri stadium under the watchful eyes of the Kerala Cricket Association officials. There are several individuals who have helped me in my journey. The list runs long.
What are your goals?
My ultimate aim is to play in the World Cup. I would like to cement my place in the Indian team by performing well in the series against Bangladesh.
Minnu is the daughter of Mani and Vasantha, from Mananthavady.
"This is a proud moment for KCA,” said secretary Vinod S Kumar, responding to Minnu’s selection in the Indian cricket team.
Excitement is sky high as Minnu is set to play for India.
