From frenzy to flop: Pakistan Super League slammed for empty stands and ‘insulting’ prizes

Karachi: Only a week into the event, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) T20 cricket tournament has been facing criticism over its failure to attract fans and the shoddy manner in which it is being organised.
When the PSL began last week, fans were in a frenzy, believing it would be an instant hit and would surpass the Indian Premier League (IPL) in terms of quality and financial gains. However, just a week into the tournament, the PSL is under fire as people have started pointing out the low turnout of spectators at stadiums and the underwhelming rewards given to players for outstanding performances.
The tournament began on 12 April. Though the organisers had expected intense matches and a massive turnout, the reality has been disappointing from the start. Most matches have been played in nearly empty stadiums. Even the match between Karachi and Lahore — considered the "El Clasico" of the PSL — saw empty stands. Despite the presence of international cricket stars in the league, the lack of audience attendance has disheartened both fans and observers.
Before the tournament started, several Pakistani players had compared the PSL to the IPL. Fast bowler Hasan Ali claimed that if there were quality matches, people would start watching it over the IPL. However, the PSL has failed to attract the same level of attention or audience engagement as the IPL. Fans have also criticised the comparisons being drawn between the two leagues.
Adding to the disappointment were the surprisingly modest prizes given to top performers. For example, Hasan Ali, who delivered a stellar performance against Lahore Qalandars, received a trimmer as his reward. Similarly, England player James Vince was given a hair dryer as a gift after scoring a century, leaving fans shocked.
