New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) responded to the controversial remarks made by Congress leader, Dr. Shama Mohamed, about Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma.

Speaking to NDTV, the BCCI secretary condemned the comments and urged that such remarks should not be made. The board also expressed concern that these statements could have a demoralizing effect on the team and players, especially as they are currently engaged in a tournament.

“The team is in the middle of a crucial tournament. It may have demoralising effect on the team and players," said BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.

The controversy began when Shama criticized Rohit Sharma's fitness and leadership, labeling him "overweight" and calling him "the most unimpressive captain India has ever had."

Reacting to the remarks, Congress MP Rajani Patil also disapproved of Shama's comments, stressing that the party does not support body shaming.

"I personally and the party also will not approve of body shaming anyone. Talking this way about a sportsperson who represents the country is not right. The party will seek a response from her on this."

In her now-deleted post, Mohamed wrote: "@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!"

Her remarks sparked widespread criticism from BJP leaders, cricket fans, and social media users.

Following the backlash, Mohamed clarified her stance denying that her comments were intended as body-shaming. She maintained that her tweet was simply an observation on athlete fitness.
