Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for another leadership change this month, with a major appointment likely on the horizon. According to reports, a legendary Indian cricketer is being considered to take over as president — continuing the trend of former players stepping into top administrative roles.

This follows the precedents set by Sourav Ganguly in 2019 and Roger Binny, who resigned recently after reaching the BCCI’s mandatory retirement age of 70. Vice-president Rajeev Shukla is currently serving as acting president until the elections, scheduled during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the last week of September.

Informal discussions are believed to have taken place in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, where a senior political figure reportedly met the cricketing great to sound out interest in the top role. While the cricketer’s stance remains unclear, the outreach signals serious intent from key stakeholders.

Elections for BCCI office bearers — including president, secretary, treasurer, vice-president, joint secretary, and IPL chairman — are expected to be settled through consensus rather than contest, as has been the case in recent terms.

Joint Secretary Devajit Saikia, Treasurer Prabhtej Bhatia, and Joint Secretary Rohan Gauns Desai are likely to continue in their positions under the existing constitution until the upcoming National Sports Governance Act potentially reshapes the rules.

Meanwhile, the race for IPL chairman is gathering pace, with Rajeev Shukla and Sanjay Naik among the contenders. Should Shukla shift from VP to IPL, Bihar Cricket Association chief Rakesh Tiwari could be elevated as a frontrunner for vice-president.

With Binny’s exit now final, the BCCI presidency is set to pass into new hands — possibly marking the return of another cricketing icon to the boardroom.
