BBL 2025-26: Scorchers storm into final as fire incident outside Optus Stadium sparks stir

Sydney, Australia: A brief fire incident outside Optus Stadium added unexpected drama to a high-stakes BBL 2025-26 qualifier on Tuesday.

During the match between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers, a small blaze, believed to be grass or a minor fire near a bridge outside the venue, sent visible smoke into the air and appeared on the broadcast. The incident caused a stir among spectators but did not disrupt play, with stadium officials quickly containing the situation.

On the field, the Scorchers delivered a commanding bowling performance to secure a direct passage to the BBL15 final, defending an 8-147 and defeating the Sixers by 48 runs at Optus Stadium.

Sydney’s bowlers had earlier kept the Scorchers in check. Kiwi star Finn Allen provided early impetus with a brisk 49, while Ashton Turner (29) and Jhye Richardson (20) offered handy contributions. However, Perth’s total never looked imposing — until their bowlers took control.

Mahli Beardman and David Payne led a relentless attack that dismantled the Sixers’ batting order. The top order faltered, leaving Steve Smith as the lone resistance before he was dismissed just after the mid-innings drinks break with Sydney struggling at 5-64. From there, the chase unravelled rapidly.

Perth tightened the screws, collecting quick wickets to close out the match emphatically. The second-last wicket summed up Sydney’s night. Sean Abbott was run out in bizarre fashion after his bat became stuck in the turf.

Jhye Richardson sealed the victory soon after, bowling the Sixers out for just 99 and sending the Scorchers straight into the final.
