Rashid Khan stars as Afghanistan seal direct spot in 2027 ODI World Cup

Belfast: Afghanistan secured automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup after defeating Ireland by three wickets in the third One-Day International on Monday.
After a disciplined bowling effort dismissed Ireland for 206 runs in 46.3 overs, Afghanistan stumbled from 97 for two to 176 for seven during their run chase.
However, Rashid Khan produced an unbeaten 37 off 43 balls, featuring four boundaries, alongside a steady 4 not out from 26 balls by Yamin Ahmadzai to guide Afghanistan to victory in 44.5 overs.
The result ensures eighth-ranked Afghanistan secure a direct spot in the next 50-over World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Afghanistan, needing a single victory to guarantee qualification entering the match, had previously defeated Ireland by 92 runs in the second ODI after the series opener was abandoned due to rain.
The tournament will mark Afghanistan's fourth consecutive participation in the ODI World Cup.
