Düsseldorf: France's journey in Euro 2024 has been defined by a staunch defence that has compensated for their struggles in attack. Despite only scoring three goals in four games, Les Bleus have progressed to the quarter-finals on the strength of their defensive solidity.

Coach Didier Deschamps emphasised the critical role of their defensive performance, praising their ability to defend well while also effectively using the ball from the back. France has conceded just one goal in the tournament, a penalty by Poland's Robert Lewandowski, highlighting their defensive prowess.

Since the 2022 World Cup, where France lost in the final, they underwent changes in key defensive positions with the retirement of longtime goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and centre-back Raphael Varane. Mike Maignan has stepped up as the new goalkeeper, making crucial saves including two against Belgium's Kevin De Bruyne in the round of 16.

The back four in front of Maignan, consisting of William Saliba, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Kounde, and Theo Hernandez, has remained consistent and has been pivotal in maintaining defensive stability. Deschamps acknowledged their quality, pointing out their experience at top clubs like Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona.

Despite these defensive achievements, France's attacking performance has been lacklustre compared to previous tournaments. They have relied on penalties and own goals for their meagre goal tally, raising questions about their ability to convert chances.

Looking ahead, France faces Portugal in the quarter-finals, aiming to capitalise on their defensive resilience while hoping to improve their offensive output. Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni emphasised the team's focus on winning rather than style, echoing the sentiment that results matter more than aesthetics.

While France's attack may be struggling, their solid defensive foundation has been instrumental in their journey to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. As they prepare for tougher challenges ahead, their ability to maintain defensive discipline will be crucial in their quest for success in the tournament. AFP
