Paris: The Indian men’s hockey team’s pursuit of Olympic glory was thwarted by Germany in a closely contested semi-final match on Tuesday, with the final scoreline reading 2-3. The defeat ended India's hopes of reaching the gold medal match, and the Men in Blue will now face Spain in the bronze medal play-off on Thursday.

The semi-final was a thrilling encounter, with both sides delivering a high-octane performance. Indian goals came from Harmanpreet Singh, who scored in the 7th minute, and Sukhjeet Singh, who added another in the 36th minute. However, Germany proved resilient, with goals from Gonzalo Peillat (18'), Christopher Ruehr (27'), and Marco Miltkau (54') securing their place in the final.

Controversy and Criticism

Post-match, Indian fans took to social media to express their frustration with the refereeing, accusing officials of bias against the Indian team. This incident adds to a growing sentiment among Indian sports enthusiasts, who have recently criticised Olympic officials for perceived biases in various sports, including boxing and hockey.

Support from Prominent Figures

Despite the loss, the Indian team received praise from prominent figures. Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh commended the team for their valiant effort, despite the result. On social media platform X, he wrote: "Not the right result for us @TheHockeyIndia in the semifinal against Germany. But we are proud of our boys. They played like champions throughout the tournament. We love you guys."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also extended his support, wishing the team well for their upcoming bronze medal match. On X, he stated: "Proud of each and every one of you on the Indian Hockey Team. You played a superb game. Keep your heads held high - best wishes for the upcoming bronze match."

Match Overview

India began aggressively, with their attacking play earning several penalty corners. Harmanpreet Singh converted one in the 7th minute, marking his eighth goal of the tournament. Germany equalised in the 18th minute through Peillat, and the score remained level at 2-2 after the third quarter.

The fourth quarter saw Germany apply sustained pressure. Despite a brilliant goal-line save by Sanjay to keep India in the game, Germany eventually took the lead through Miltkau’s decisive goal in the 54th minute, securing their place in the final.

Future Prospects

Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey reflected on the semi-final performance, suggesting that India had ample opportunities to secure a win. Speaking to ANI, Tirkey commented: “I wouldn’t say it was a close match because we got a lot of chances to score a goal. It is due to our own mistakes that we could not reach the finals. I have faith that the players will make a comeback after this defeat.”
