New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra, India's reigning Olympic javelin champion, has overcome concerns surrounding his fitness ahead of the Paris Games, according to his German coach Klaus Bartonietz. The 26-year-old had been troubled by an adductor niggle in recent months, prompting precautionary measures and selective participation in competitions.

Speaking exclusively to PTI from Antalya, Turkey, where they are currently training, Bartonietz assured that Chopra's fitness is now stable. He emphasised that they are in the high-intensity phase of preparations, with Chopra engaging in full throwing sessions as the Olympics draw near.

Chopra withdrew from the Ostrava Golden Spike on May 28 due to concerns over his adductor, but returned strongly to win gold at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on June 18 with a throw of 85.97m. He subsequently opted out of the Paris Diamond League on July 7, a decision Bartonietz defended, citing minor issues and the event's non-essential status in their preparation plan.

Reflecting on Chopra's training regimen, Bartonietz outlined a routine reminiscent of their approach before the Tokyo Olympics, involving morning and evening sessions focusing on sprinting, jumping, throwing, and weightlifting for activation.

Addressing the reduced number of competitions Chopra has participated in compared to his pre-Tokyo schedule, Bartonietz dismissed concerns, noting that excessive competitions can disrupt preparation and increase logistical challenges. He drew parallels with legendary thrower Jan Zelezny's minimalist approach before his successful Olympic campaigns.

Regarding medal predictions, Bartonietz remained cautious despite a relatively open field in javelin this season. He highlighted the unpredictability of high-pressure Olympic competitions, where any thrower in top form can clinch a medal. He refused to speculate on Chopra's chances but acknowledged the competitive field including top contenders like German youngster Mex Dehning and former world champions.

Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, Bartonietz commented on the advantage of the venue's purple-coloured Mondo tracks, known for their speed-enhancing properties in sprinting events. While beneficial for javelin runners, Bartonietz emphasised the need for Chopra to capitalise fully on the track's potential speed.

On a whole, as Chopra gears up for his qualification round on August 6, Bartonietz expressed confidence in their preparation despite the uncertainties typical of Olympic competition. He underscored Chopra's focus on training over competing, aiming to peak at the right moment for another shot at Olympic glory. PTI
