Paris: Mirabai Chanu, the Indian weightlifter who grabbed attention with a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, is gearing up for another shot at glory despite facing setbacks from injuries and a challenging field.

Since her notable performance in Tokyo, where she lifted a total of 202kg (87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk), Chanu has faced a tumultuous journey marked by injury woes. A hip tendonitis during the Asian Games in October last year sidelined her, leading to a subdued Olympic cycle thereafter. Her return to competitive form peaked at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she managed a lift of 201kg (88kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk).

Now, Chanu is poised to rewrite history as she aims to become India's first weightlifter to clinch two Olympic medals. Competing in her favored 49kg weight category, she faces stiff competition, particularly from reigning Olympic champion Hou Zhihui of China. Despite lingering concerns about her fitness following her return from injury, both Chanu and her coach Vijay Sharma have expressed confidence in her recovery and readiness.

"We know that Mira has to go well beyond the 200kg mark. 202kg will not cut it this time but somewhere around 205-206kg should do it. But we are prepared for the challenge," coach Sharma affirmed, emphasizing the need for Chanu to surpass her personal bests in both the snatch and clean and jerk disciplines.

However, this endeavor is no easy task. Chanu has struggled to surpass her personal best of 88kg in the snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk, achieved at previous championships. While her competitors have moved past these benchmarks, Chanu remains undeterred, known for her resilience and fierce competitive spirit.

Her preparations have been meticulous, training rigorously in Paris for the past month. Additionally, she has received guidance from Dr. Aaron Horschig, a renowned physical therapist and strength coach, since 2020, underscoring her commitment to peak physical condition.

Despite the absence of formidable opponents like North Korea's Ri Song Gum, the competition promises to be fierce. Chanu faces tough challengers including USA's Jourdan Delacruz and Thailand's Surodchana Khambao, both accomplished athletes in their own right.

Chanu's journey has been defined by overcoming obstacles, from battling through injuries to defying expectations on the global stage. Her determination was evident in Tokyo, where she triumphed despite adversity. As she turns 30, Chanu's focus remains steadfast on surpassing her own limits and clinching Olympic glory once again.

The upcoming competition at the South Paris Arena will not only test Chanu's physical prowess but also her mental resilience. With her eyes set on the podium, she embodies the spirit of a true champion, poised to make her mark on the world stage once more.

Mirabai Chanu's journey from injury setbacks to Olympic redemption is a testament to her unwavering dedication and fighting spirit. As she prepares to take on the world's best in weightlifting, all eyes are on her quest to etch her name in India's sporting history yet again. PTI
