Texas: A massive explosion followed by a series of intense fires erupted at the Valero Port Arthur Refinery on Monday evening, prompting local authorities to issue an immediate shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

The blast occurred at approximately 7:22 p.m. local time (5:52 a.m. IST, Tuesday), sending a shockwave that rattled windows and was reportedly heard several miles away in the Mid-County area. Huge plumes of thick, black smoke and towering flames were visible from the facility, which is one of the largest oil processing hubs in the United States.

Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens stated in an initial briefing that the incident appears to have originated within an industrial heater unit. However, a formal investigation into the precise cause of the detonation is expected to begin once the site is fully secured.

By 9:00 p.m. local time (7:30 a.m. IST, Tuesday), emergency crews and refinery fire teams had managed to contain the bulk of the blaze, though cooling operations remained active throughout the night. Valero officials confirmed shortly after the event that all personnel on-site had been accounted for, and no injuries were reported among the workforce or the surrounding community.

The Port Arthur Fire Department, alongside hazardous materials teams, has commenced continuous air-quality monitoring. Residents on the west side of the city were advised to remain indoors with air conditioning units turned off due to a pungent sulfur-like odour lingering in the atmosphere. Several local schools and public facilities were also placed under precautionary lockdowns.

The Texas Department of Transportation has closed sections of State Highway 87 and State Highway 82 to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.

The Valero Port Arthur Refinery has a total throughput capacity of approximately 435,000 barrels per day. It remains unclear how significantly the damage will impact daily production or if the outage will have a broader effect on regional fuel supplies.
