Trump loses again as US Supreme Court rejects bid to overturn $5M Carroll verdict

The US Supreme Court has again rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a jury verdict ordering him to pay $5 million to writer E. Jean Carroll.
The justices on Monday turned down a request from Trump’s lawyers to reconsider the court’s earlier decision not to hear his appeal.
The verdict stems from Carroll’s allegation that Trump sexually abused her at a New York City department store in the mid-1990s and later defamed her.
A jury in 2023 found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her over comments he made after she publicly accused him. Trump has denied wrongdoing.
Trump paid the $5 million judgment shortly after the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal in June.
Separate $83 million appeal remains
Trump and the US Justice Department are also seeking to overturn a separate verdict requiring Trump to pay Carroll $83 million.
That case concerns comments Trump made about Carroll in 2019, while he was president. His lawyers argue that he should be protected by presidential immunity from the defamation lawsuit.
The Supreme Court has not yet ruled on that appeal.

Carroll testified about alleged assault
Carroll, a longtime advice columnist and former television talk show host, testified during the 2023 trial that Trump attacked her in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store in Manhattan, during the 1990s.
She said what began as a friendly encounter turned violent.
A jury later found Trump liable for defamation after he denied Carroll’s allegations in 2022.
Trump has consistently denied the allegations and any wrongdoing.
