US revokes additional 25% tariff on Indian imports after New Delhi halts Russian oil purchases

Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order revoking the additional 25 per cent tariff imposed on all imports from India, following a review of New Delhi’s recent actions related to Russian oil purchases, the White House said.
The United States had introduced the extra duty in August 2025, citing India’s direct and indirect imports of Russian oil amid concerns over Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The tariff was imposed under a national emergency declared through an earlier executive order.
Why are tariffs being revoked now?
According to the White House, the decision to terminate the additional levy follows the consideration of new information and recommendations from senior US officials. These officials assessed India’s steps to address the national emergency and align more closely with US national security, foreign policy and economic priorities.

The administration said India has committed to halting all direct and indirect imports of Russian Federation oil, pledged to increase purchases of US energy products, and agreed to a framework with Washington to expand defence cooperation over the next decade.
“After considering the information and recommendations these officials have provided to me, among other things, I have determined that India has taken significant steps to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066 and to align sufficiently with the United States,” the executive order said. It added that the tariff modification was “necessary and appropriate” in light of the ongoing national emergency.
As a result, the additional 25 per cent duty imposed under the relevant executive order will be eliminated, and the associated tariff provisions under the Harmonised Tariff Schedule of the United States will be terminated. The White House said refunds for duties already collected would be processed where applicable, in accordance with US law and standard procedures of US Customs and Border Protection.

The order authorises the Secretary of State, in coordination with other senior officials and departments, to take steps necessary to implement the decision, including issuing rules and regulations. The Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the US International Trade Commission, may also make technical amendments to the tariff schedule through a notice in the Federal Register.
The White House said the US would continue to monitor India’s compliance, particularly with regard to imports of Russian oil. It warned that the additional tariff could be reimposed if India resumes direct or indirect purchases of Russian Federation oil.

The US had previously justified the additional 25 per cent tariff by stating that India continued to import Russian oil despite international efforts to isolate Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
