Jeddah: Five US Air Force KC-135 refuelling planes were damaged during an Iranian missile strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, according to two US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. The aircraft were hit in recent days but are being repaired, and no personnel were harmed in the attacks.

What happened?

Five US Air Force KC-135 refuelling planes were damaged on the ground at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia during recent Iranian missile strikes, according to US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. Fortunately, no personnel were injured, and all damaged aircraft are being repaired.

Why is Prince Sultan Air Base important?

Prince Sultan Air Base has been a key US military hub since the 1990s. Although operations were scaled back in the early 2000s, the US returned in 2019 amid rising tensions with Iran, forming the 378th Expeditionary Wing. The base hosts a significant number of US air assets, making it a strategic location for long-range strikes and air patrols in the region.

The Iranian missile strike reportedly targeted multiple aircraft, with open-source monitoring showing repeated drone and missile attacks over the past two weeks. While the KC-135 tankers were damaged, the impact is not considered catastrophic, and the aircraft are being repaired for future operations.

What does this mean for US military operations?

The temporary loss of five KC-135 tankers increases operational pressure, as these aircraft are essential for in-air refuelling and long-range missions. However, the US Air Force operates a large fleet, including 376 KC-135s, about 100 KC-46A Pegasus tankers, and additional MC-130J support aircraft, ensuring overall capabilities remain intact.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has not publicly commented on the strike or the extent of the damage, leaving details limited to official and media sources.

The attack highlights the ongoing risks to US forces in the Middle East and the strategic significance of Prince Sultan Air Base. While the damage is repairable, repeated strikes underscore the heightened tensions with Iran and the vulnerability of forward-deployed assets.
