According to the Department of Homeland Security, the Venezuelan man, who was reportedly in the US illegally, fled a traffic stop and was confronted by federal officers. Two other individuals allegedly attacked the ICE officer with a broomstick and snow shovel before the shooting occurred.

This followed the 7 January fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, an American citizen, by another ICE officer, which has intensified local protests.
