Beijing: A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China's Tibet region late Thursday, according to US seismologists. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The earthquake struck at 10.33 pm local time (1433 GMT), with its epicentre in a mountainous area around 190 kilometres east-northeast of Nagqu and 390 kilometres northeast of the regional capital, Lhasa.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US seismologists.

China's Earthquake Administration has activated a Level II emergency response following the tremor, state news agency Xinhua reported in a brief dispatch.

Earthquakes are relatively common in China. In January 2025, at least 126 people were killed when a powerful earthquake struck Tingri county in rural Tibet.
