Putin in India: A look inside his Flying Fortress and armoured Aurus Senat

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to land in New Delhi for a 30-hour working visit as he joins Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 23rd annual India–Russia summit. This trip is his first to India in four years and also the first since Russia’s military action in Ukraine began in 2022.

As Putin returns to the country, attention has once again turned to the extraordinary convoy that follows him everywhere, particularly his highly fortified aircraft known as the “Flying Kremlin” and his armoured Aurus Senat, often described as the “Russian Rolls Royce”. These vehicles are not simply modes of transport; they are symbols of state power designed to protect one of the world’s most guarded leaders.

What is the story behind Putin’s presidential aircraft?

Putin travels in an Ilyushin Il-96-300, a large four-engine jet with deep roots in the Soviet aviation industry. Designed during the 1980s by the Ilyushin Design Bureau to replace older airliners, the model first flew on 28 September 1988. It later received Russian certification in late 1992 and entered commercial service in July 1993.

The plane depends on four Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofan engines. Each one produces 35,000 pounds of thrust, which is approximately 15,876 kilograms of power per engine.

How is the presidential version different from the original?

The aircraft used for Putin’s travel is not the standard model. His upgraded variant is officially known as the Il-96-300PU. The designation “PU” stands for “Punkt Upravleniya”, which translates to “command post” in Russian. It was developed in the early 2000s specifically to transport top state officials.

Once on board, the atmosphere resembles a luxurious residence rather than an airline cabin. Instead of narrow aisles and small washrooms, the layout includes dedicated conference rooms for official meetings, a private workspace, comfortable sleeping quarters and opulent features such as gold-coloured details and polished wooden interiors, similar to what one might expect in a luxury hotel. Even with these additions, the aircraft can still seat up to 262 passengers in a two-class arrangement.

What sort of technology and security does the aircraft carry?

The Il-96-300PU is equipped with an array of secure communication systems designed to prevent interception. The aircraft also includes missile-defence measures and a nuclear command button. This feature allows the President to approve a nuclear response in a major crisis situation, even when flying thousands of feet above the ground.

The cockpit features modern technology, including six multi-function LCD screens, a glass cockpit layout and fly-by-wire controls that deliver smoother handling. Special winglets on the wings improve fuel efficiency.

What is special about the Aurus Senat limousine?

Once Putin steps off the aircraft, he moves into his other signature vehicle, the Aurus Senat Limousine. Often compared to a Rolls Royce and described as a “fortress on wheels”, it is a regular part of his international travel arrangements. India also received Putin and his preferred vehicle during his recent visit to New Delhi.

The Aurus brand is relatively new in the luxury automotive world. Its name combines “Au” from Aurum, the Latin word for gold, with “Rus” representing Russia. Aurus Motors began operating in Moscow in 2018 to build state limousines and extended availability to civilian buyers in 2021. Production remains limited, at only 120 units per year.

How powerful and luxurious is Putin’s personal car?

Putin’s own Aurus Senat carries a price tag of around 50 million roubles, which is approximately 617,500 dollars or 5.5 crore rupees. Beneath its elegant exterior lies a 4.4 litre V8 engine that produces 598 horsepower and 880 Newton-metres of torque. A more powerful V12 version is also available, generating 850 horsepower.

The inside of the car reflects the same luxury standards as the plane. It includes leather seating, ambient lighting that can shift colours and premium wood finishes that give the cabin a refined aesthetic. However, in this vehicle, comfort always follows security.

What kind of protection does the Aurus Senat offer?

The Aurus Senat includes advanced safety technology. There is an integrated fire suppression system that activates automatically, air filtration that protects against chemical threats and an independent oxygen unit for emergencies.

Its armour is exceptional. At close to seven metres long and weighing several tonnes, the car is fitted with 20-inch bullet-resistant wheels and meets VR10 ballistic protection standards. This rating means that the vehicle can endure high-powered rifle rounds and armour-piercing bullets. The windows are made from glass that is six centimetres thick, and the car contains emergency exits, a compact command station and layers of protection against grenades and chemical hazards.

In 2024, Russia gifted one of these vehicles to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Civilian customers may purchase a version for about 18 million roubles, roughly 2.5 crore rupees, although the public model does not include the same level of heavy armour.
