Letters to gowns: Largest auction of Princess Diana's belongings to kick off in California

Beverly Hills: The largest auction of Diana memorabilia since the late British princess sold many of her outfits shortly before her death is taking place in California this week. The auction will feature a midnight blue tulle dress and a flamenco-style lace-up number.

Nearly fifty items, including gowns, shoes, handbags, and hats, will be auctioned in Beverly Hills. Highlights include Arbeid's blue diamante ball gown, worn by Diana in 1986 at the London premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera," and a magenta lace dress by Edelstein. Both pieces are anticipated to sell for up to $400,000, according to Julien's Auctions, which is hosting the event.

Diana married Britain's current King Charles in 1981 in a lavish ceremony watched by millions worldwide. However, their relationship soured over the years, becoming a staple for newspapers and gossip magazines, and fueling the burgeoning celebrity culture of the 1990s. The couple had two children, Princes William and Harry, but divorced in 1996 amidst tabloid scandals and mutual infidelities. Diana died in a car crash in Paris the following year while attempting to evade paparazzi with her lover.

Over twenty-five years later, Diana, known as "The People's Princess," remains an unparalleled celebrity and style icon who continues to captivate millions. A dress she wore that was auctioned last year fetched a remarkable $1.14 million.

The current collection, which has been on a global tour for months, is expected to attract significant interest by the time the auction ends on Thursday. In addition to high couture items, the sale will include shoes by Salvatore Ferragamo, Kurt Geiger, and Rayne, as well as letters written by Diana and other items related to the British royal family.  AFP
