Why an emotional tribute to Asha Bhosle turned into a legal row in Pakistan

Islamabad: Pakistan’s media regulator, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News over its broadcast of content related to legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, following her death on April 12 in Mumbai at the age of 92.
According to the notice, the channel allegedly aired segments that included Indian film visuals and songs as part of a tribute to Asha Bhosle. PEMRA stated that such content was in violation of existing regulations, which restrict the broadcasting of Indian media content on television channels in Pakistan.
The regulator referred to a 2018 ruling by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which had prohibited the airing of Indian content on Pakistani TV channels. The notice claimed that Geo News violated these guidelines by incorporating Indian film footage and music while covering the singer’s legacy.
The development has sparked debate over the balance between cultural tribute and regulatory compliance, particularly in cases involving internationally renowned artists whose work spans across borders.
Geo News Managing Director Azhar Abbas responded to the notice publicly, stating that acknowledging and honouring legendary artists has always been part of journalistic practice. He also suggested that Asha Bhosle’s musical contributions deserved wider recognition, including the broadcasting of more of her songs.
PEMRA has directed Geo News CEO Mir Ibrahim Rahman to appear before the authority on April 27. The channel has also been instructed to submit a written explanation within 14 days, justifying why further legal action should not be taken in the matter.
Asha Bhosle’s passing has drawn global tributes from the music and entertainment industry, with her decades-long career and contribution to Indian cinema music being widely acknowledged. Her funeral was held with full state honours in Mumbai, marking the end of an era in Indian playback music.
