Nepal moves to block Facebook, X and YouTube – here’s the reason

Kathmandu: Nepal’s government has announced it will block most social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, citing non-compliance with regulations requiring official registration in the country.

Government demands registration

Nepal’s Minister for Communication and Information, Prithvi Subba Gurung, said around two dozen widely used social network platforms had repeatedly been issued notices to register their companies officially. “The platforms would be blocked immediately,” he stated.

Exceptions for registered platforms

TikTok, Viber and three other social media platforms have been allowed to continue operations in Nepal, as they have complied with government registration requirements.

Proposed legislation under debate

The government has proposed a bill in parliament aimed at ensuring social platforms are properly managed, responsible and accountable. Officials said companies were also asked to appoint a liaison office or point in Nepal to comply with the regulations.

Criticism over censorship concerns

Rights groups have criticised the bill, calling it a potential tool for censorship and a way to punish opponents who voice protests online. They argued it could curb freedom of expression and violate citizens’ fundamental rights.

Government stance

Officials maintain the legislation is necessary to monitor social media and ensure both users and operators are responsible for the content shared and published on these platforms.
