As 2025 concludes, Muhammad Arif Habib has emerged as the defining figure of Pakistan’s economic landscape. On December 23, 2025, Habib cemented his status as the nation's premier dealmaker by securing the landmark privatisation bid for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) with an offer of Rs 135 billion ($482 million).

The Rise of a Financial Titan

The 72-year-old entrepreneur’s journey began in 1970 as a Karachi Stock Exchange broker. Over 50 years, he evolved a local brokerage into a multibillion-dollar conglomerate, Arif Habib Corporation Limited (AHCL). Known for a "contrarian" strategy, Habib specialises in acquiring distressed or state-owned assets during fiscal crises and steering them toward profitability. His systemic influence is underscored by his six terms as Chairman of the Karachi Stock Exchange and his role as a founder of the Central Depository Company (CDC).

AHCL: A Multi-Sector Empire

Arif Habib Corporation serves as the pivot for a portfolio spanning the backbone of the Pakistani economy. By June 30, 2025, the corporation reported revenues of Rs 13.01 billion, with net income rising 32.8% to Rs 10.39 billion.

  • Manufacturing: The group controls Fatima Fertiliser and Pakarab Fertilisers, vital for national food security. In the industrial sector, Aisha Steel Mills—a partnership with Mitsubishi—stands as a top private steel producer, while Power Cement Limited achieved a turnaround in FY25 with an Rs 815 million profit.
  • Finance: Arif Habib Limited (AHL) remains a dominant force in investment banking, earning multiple global accolades for research and corporate finance in recent years.
  • Real Estate: Through Javedan Corporation, Habib manages the 1,300-acre Naya Nazimabad project and pioneered the region's first listed Real Estate Investment Trust, Dolmen City REIT.
  • Energy: The group has expanded into renewables via Sachal Energy Development, a wind power initiative reflecting a shift toward sustainable growth.

The PIA Transformation

The acquisition of the national carrier represents Habib’s debut in aviation. His consortium, including Lake City Holdings and Fatima Fertiliser, has committed to an Rs 80 billion investment over five years to upgrade PIA's fleet and international network.

"Our goal is to bring back the glory of the 1970s for our national carrier," Habib stated, signalling his intent to lead a high-profile national recovery project.

Philanthropy and Honours

A recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz for his economic contributions, Habib is also a major philanthropic force. He supports the Karachi School of Business and Leadership (KSBL) and holds board positions at the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy and the Habib University Foundation, ensuring his legacy extends beyond industrial acquisition to academic and social development.
